Drugmaker Aspen sells baby milk business to dairy giant Lactalis

Aspen Pharmacare (APNJ.J) has agreed to sell its infant formula business to Lactalis for 12.9 billion rand (660.64 million pounds) to focus on core activities while the French buyer looks to revive its baby milk expansion after a health scandal. The company's share price tumbled after the deal's announcement on Thursday alongside full-year earnings, dropping 26 percent before paring losses to stand 16.3 percent down at 228.06 rand by 1430 GMT. Rising incomes in emerging markets coupled with global population growth have made infant formula an attractive proposition in a market dominated by Nestle (NESN.S), Danone (DANO.PA) and Reckitt Benckiser (RB.L), which acquired Mead Johnson of the United States last year.

African drugmaker Aspen Pharmacare (APNJ.J) has agreed to sell its infant formula business to French dairy group Lactalis for 12.9 billion rand ($865 million), looking to capitalise on the sector's recent flurry of dealmaking to reduce its debt and focus on core operations. Shares in Aspen dropped more than 9 percent to 245.85 rand after Africa's biggest manufacturer of generic drugs announced the deal as it reported full-year earnings. Rising incomes in emerging markets coupled with global population growth have made infant formula an attractive proposition in a market dominated by Nestle (NESN.S), Danone (DANO.PA) and Reckitt Benckiser (RB.L), which acquired Mead Johnson of the United States last year.
French Billionaire Cheese King Eyes China Baby-Food Market

Lactalis International agreed to buy an infant-formula business from Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Ltd. for 740 million euros ($860 million) as the world’s biggest cheese maker targets the fast-growing Chinese baby-food market. The move will enable the company run by French billionaire Emmanuel Besnier to tap rising demand for baby food in Asia’s biggest economy following the scrapping of its one-child policy around 2016. For Aspen’s part, the sale will enable Africa’s biggest drugmaker to focus on its main pharmaceutical operations, the Durban, South Africa-based company said in a statement on Thursday.
