FirstEnergy may shut West Virginia coal-fired power plant
Posted on Friday February 16, 2018

One of the coal-fired power stations along with the Bruce Mansfield plant in Beaver County under review by FirstEnergy Corp. could be shut at the end of the year. FirstEnergy (FE) announced Friday it had notified PJM Interconnection of its intention to deactivate Allegheny Energy Supply's Pleasants Power Station in Willow Island, W.Va., on the Ohio River south of Pittsburgh. The 1,300-megawatt Pleasants station is one of the competitive coal-fired stations that FirstEnergy has said it will make a decision about either selling or closing by the middle of 2018.

FirstEnergy to Deactivate Pleasants Power Station in West Virginia
Posted on Friday February 16, 2018

AKRON, Ohio, Feb. 16, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- FirstEnergy Corp. (FE) announced that its Allegheny Energy Supply subsidiary today notified PJM Interconnection (PJM), the regional transmission organization, of its plan to deactivate the coal-fired Pleasants Power Station in Willow Island, West Virginia.  The 1,300-megawatt (MW) plant will be sold or closed on January 1, 2019.  The plant deactivation is subject to PJM's review for reliability impacts, if any. FirstEnergy subsidiary Mon Power filed a plan in March 2017 seeking regulatory approval to acquire the Pleasants Power Station, which would have resolved a projected 10-year energy capacity shortfall and decreased electric bills for customers.  The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) rejected the proposal on January 12, 2018.  The Public Service Commission of West Virginia approved the sale subject to a number of significant conditions.
