Japan's Mitsui wins bidding war for Australian gas producer AWE
Posted on Sunday February 04, 2018
Mitsui & Co <8031.T> won a three-way bidding war to take over Australia's AWE Ltd (AWE.AX), after rival Mineral Resources (MIN.AX) failed to match the Japanese trading giant's A$594 million (£332.94 million) offer. Assuming the deal goes ahead, it would mark Mitsui's first takeover of an Australian company and give it a 50 percent stake in the country's biggest onshore conventional gas find in 40 years at a time when local gas demand is soaring. "It should be a relatively low risk investment for Mitsui with the possibility of very decent returns, given the upswing in domestic gas prices in Australia," said Tom O'Sullivan, managing director of energy consultancy Mathyos Japan in Tokyo.

AWE raises reserves estimate at flagship gas field amid takeover offers
Posted on Monday December 18, 2017
Australian gas producer AWE Ltd raised the reserves estimate on its flagship Waitsia gas field, and said further upgrades were likely, raising the stakes for two suitors vying to take over the company. AWE's shares rose 1.5 percent on the back of the announcement, to value the company at A$511 million ($391 million), topping the offers from Australian miner Mineral Resources Ltd and state-owned China Energy Reserve and Chemicals Group (CERCG). AWE said on Tuesday Waitsia holds 820 petajoules of proved and probable reserves, up from the previous estimate of 811 PJ as some contingent reserves have been reclassified.

Australian gas producer AWE Ltd said on Tuesday it is raising its proved and probable reserves at its flagship Waitsia field by 80 percent to 820 petajoules. AWE is in the midst of takeover offers, having received two offers over the month from a Chinese bidder and, locally from Mineral Resources, both eyeing the potential of the Waitsia mine, which AWE has called Australia's biggest onshore conventional gas discovery in four decades.
